Chet Hanks marks 2 years of sobriety after hitting ‘rock bottom’

Chet Hanks has hit a major milestone on his sobriety journey. 

The 34-year-old, who is the son of actors Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, celebrated the two-year anniversary of his sobriety with his Surreal Life costars on Tuesday’s episode. 

“You know what today is?” Hanks tells pal Tyler Posey in a clip from the episode posted on Instagram. The camera then cuts to highlight the Twelve Steps app on his phone as he adds, “This is my two-year sober birthday, bro.”

To commemorate the special occasion, Hanks’ costars all came together to throw him a birthday party at their shared dinner table — complete with a tasty treat made by Macy Gray. During the festivities, Hanks recalled the dangerous incident that inspired him to get clean. 

“Two years ago today, I was coming off a three-day coke binge where I didn’t eat, sleep, or barely drink any water for three days straight,” he said. “When I got to Vegas, I weighed 190 pounds. At the end of it, I weighed 163. I lost 27 pounds in three days, so my disease is gnarly. It’s not pretty. I went straight from Vegas, checked myself into rehab… again.” 

He continued, “Here I am, 31 years old, broke, strung out, sucked up, just skinny, just at rock bottom. I just knew, man, if I don’t change my life in a drastic way, either I’m not even going to be around, or something bad — so bad — is going to happen that my life might as well be over, ‘cause that’s where I was headed.” 

Hanks, who has been open about his struggles with addiction and visiting rehab over the years, noted that he “managed to do the work, get myself clean, get myself sober” and now, two years later, is “having the time of my f—ing life.” 

He concluded, “Life is good. God is great. That’s all I gotta say.”

In a confessional, Hanks noted that he was really moved by his costars all coming together to honor his ongoing journey, adding, “They were all there to celebrate and support me being sober, which really touches me.” 

The “White Boy Summer” rapper told PEOPLE last month that none of his recent achievements — which includes landing a role in the Netflix series Running Point opposite Kate Hudson — would be possible had he not gotten the help he needed. 

“It’s not difficult at all,” Hanks said of sobriety. “What’s difficult is when you’re trying to manage your life and you’re not sober, that’s what’s difficult. When you just commit and decide and you stick to it, it’s not even something that you negotiate with. It’s just a non-negotiable. And life becomes extremely easy.”
