Thunderstorms, some strong, arrive late afternoon in metro

We have some exciting weather on tap for several hours this weekend, and of course that will be late Saturday afternoon and evening. Otherwise, the weather remains uneventful rest of today through the end of next week. The clouds cleared nicely this afternoon, and temperatures are close to normal for late summer…around 80 degrees. Skies remain mainly clear tonight.

Get ready for much warmer temperatures and sunshine Saturday morning through early afternoon. Temperatures should soar well into the 80s with a few spots possibly touching 90 degrees by mid-late afternoon. So, you can enjoy some summer temps/sunshine through early-midafternoon tomorrow.

Our weather forecast models are now in good agreement that a weather disturbance will move north through western Oregon tomorrow afternoon through evening, setting off thunderstorms as it moves into the warm/humid airmass. Models are also in good agreement now that thunderstorms are likely to pop up or arrive over the southern Willamette Valley mid-afternoon, then quickly spread north to the metro around between 4-7pm. If you have an outdoor event in the Portland metro area that finishes by 4-5pm, you may be just fine. But if you have an evening event, there’s a good chance you’ll experience at least brief downpours and possibly gusty wind plus lightning. Saturday afternoon is the time to keep a close eye on your First Alert Weather app or any other radar. Storms will arrive from the south, so keep an eye on the southern sky too. Thunderstorm coverage will be spotty so some areas could pick up an inch of rain in downpours with street flooding, but other areas just a light shower.

Over the Cascades, lifting and atmospheric energy will be even stronger so it’s possible a severe thunderstorm forms there. That could include large hail or damaging wind.

The weather action is mainly done after 8pm or so as storms move north to Puget Sound. One other effect from this system will be a strong/damaging wind in the eastern Columbia River Gorge and Columbia Basin. Light northeast wind will suddenly turn westerly 6-9pm with gusts 55-70 mph out there. Lots of blowing dust!

Sunday through Tuesday we’ll see mainly or all dry conditions with partly cloudy skies, but the cooler-than-normal weather continues through the end of next week. There’s no sign of a hot spell for the next 10 days.
