First day of school impacted by flooding in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – While Monday was the first day of school for many in Horry County, it started differently than they thought it would.

“I’ve been nervous for days, not knowing how we were going to get to the bus, not sure how we were going to drive him out of the neighborhood to get to school,” Taylor Micheau, a mom in the Rosewood neighborhood said.

Her son started first grade on Monday but with a few modifications to their usual back-to-school routine. Their neighborhood and bus stop are seeing flooding from the Intracoastal Waterway.

“It’s pooling up in our yard, coming up to our road. we’re the very last road,” she said.

Micheau’s road is flooding at both ends, blocking both bus stops and forcing the school system to add an alternate stop about a quarter mile from their original one.

The other side of the waterway is also being affected.

Nick Graham lives on the other side of the ICW and they are having issues even getting to the road.

“It was inaccessible, and I believe it’s still inaccessible. We’re going to try to see if we can get through the road this afternoon,” Graham said.

Because they couldn’t get through the road, his three kids missed their first day of school. An event Graham said he hates because the first day is so important.

They did get some good news though.

“They did say they would mark it as a weather-related incident, so we wouldn’t have an unexcused absence, which is good,” he explained.

Some parents even took to kayaking to get their kids to the bus stop Monday morning.

Micheau hopes those who weren’t affected will remember that not everyone is so lucky.

“It is still affecting other people, so just be vigilant, essentially. Just keep other people in mind that might be being affected by it,” she said.

The Intracoastal Waterway was expected to crest overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Those in the neighborhood said they’ve had a rough few days, and they know it will take time to return to normal.
