Team USA Soccer Star Lynn Williams Broke Gold Medal Partying in Paris

Team USA soccer player Lynn Williams celebrated winning her gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics a little too hard!

On Wednesday, Aug. 21, the U.S. women’s national soccer team forward, 31, went into detail on TikTokabout how she broke her medal, after previously revealing on Instagram on Aug. 11. that the ribbon meant to hang around her neck was no longer attached to the hardware.

Williams had been celebrating Team USA’s 1-0 win against Brazil on Aug. 10 when the medallion part broke off.

Showcasing the broken accolade in the TikTok clip, the athlete shared while making food, “Thought it was finally time to tell you the long-awaited question… how did I break my medal? How did I get the world’s most expensive coaster?”

Williams showed followers how the bar that had been holding the ribbon was gone, before inserting a previous clip into the new video showing her swinging the medal around during the Olympics celebrations.

“Ironically, that’s not how it broke… I’m sure it didn’t help, but that’s not how it broke,” Williams insisted, admitting she’d been dancing when it happened.

“I had it on my shoulder like a little purse, and I was just jumping, dancing, jumping,” she said in the TikTok clip, adding, “And I jumped down, and it just fell off. So everybody was dancing, and I was roaming around trying to get my medal off the ground. It has a dent now, so it’s definitely one of a kind.”

“I just think they should’ve made these better, they should’ve made them more sturdy, and honestly I can’t be faulted for that,” Williams insisted, sharing how she’d been in touch with the International Olympic Committee about it.

“I don’t know if I’m going to get it fixed,” Williams told the camera. “We are waiting to hear from the IOC, the Olympic Committee. They said I could probably get one. I had to prove to them that it was, in fact, damaged, but now we’re just waiting to see. If not, honestly, I think it’s a cool, funny story.”

“Story time… 🥇,” the soccer star captioned the post.

On Aug. 23 an Olympics spokesperson told PEOPLE that, ” the medals are the most coveted objects of the Games and the most precious for the athletes. Damaged medals will be systematically replaced by Monnaie de Paris and engraved in an identical way to the originals.”

Williams’ comments come after Team USA Olympic skateboarder Nyjah Huston showed fans how his bronze medal, which he won in the men’s street skateboarding final on July 29, was looking a little worse for wear.

At the time, a Paris 2024 spokesperson told PEOPLE in a release, “Paris 2024 is working closely with the Monnaie de Paris, the institution tasked with the production and quality control of the medals, and together with the National Olympic Committee of the athlete concerned, in order to appraise the medal to understand the circumstances and cause of the damage.”
